Bulk Paste Tomatoes/Basil, Pastured Pork Winter CSA and More Farm News

Posted 8/27/2014 6:18am by Michael Scheidel.

Hey Good Folks,

We had a wonderful evening on Saturday for our 2nd Farmer's Table Dinner.  Our three Chefs did an outstanding job at creating a 6 course meal with all farm ingredients.  Thank you to all who came and supported the event and the auction which raised funds for a Schuylkill County homeless shelter.

Tomato season is quickly coming to an end especially with such cool nights and high disease pressure.  So if you have any plans on making sauce for canning or freezing or just freezing whole tomatoes, now is the time!  We have bulk paste tomatoes for sale.  The fruits are of several heirloom varieties including Sicilio Rosso, Amish Paste, Roman Candle, San Marzano, and more.  Bulk pricing on basil is also available.  We have a special discount for CSA members!  E-mail if you are interested.

For the third year we are offering pastured pork from our farm.  We've raised these hogs on pasture and transitional organic feed from a mill in Oley who grinds some of the highest quality NON GMO feed you can find.  Hogs will be sold by the whole, half, or quarter and we can walk you through the whole process with the butcher to make it easy.  E-mail if you are interested and we can discuss price and details.

We are once again offering a winter CSA this year.  The 8 week season will begin the last week in October, a week after the summer CSA season ends, and end the week of December 16th.  We will send out more information in the next couple of weeks.  The winter CSA will feature a great variety of greens, root crops, storage vegetables, potatoes, garlic, dried beans and more.  Stay tuned for more details.

I've continued cover cropping, using crop rotations, applying manure, and adding organic fertilizer including Atlantic kelp meal which has all helped us produce high quality and nutrient dense food.  This has been a great growing season so far and we're looking forward to a great fall and winter season.  In the next couple of weeks you will begin to see seasonal changes in what we have.  You'll see tomatoes begin to dwindle while winter squash, pumpkin, salad mix, head lettuce, radish, turnip, carrots, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, rutabaga, kale, pac choi, and lots more begin to show up again.  So watch the market tables change as the season begins to change.  Thank you for enjoying our farm.  Stay tuned for more farm news!

Gratefully Growing!
