Hey good folks!

THANK YOUS

We wanted to thank everyone who came out to our pot-luck dinner last night.  We had a great time; weather was perfect, hay rides went smoothly (NO INJURIES!), food was excellent and our presenters shared their experience of building a home completely off the grid solar.

THE FARMER'S TABLE

We are very excited to once again host a true farm-to-table event here at the farm on Saturday, August 23rd at 6 p.m. and are calling it THE FARMER'S TABLE.  This fine 6 course meal will be prepared using all ingredients raised on our farm; pasture raised pork and chicken, our lamb, and all of our own vegetables, herbs, and fruits.  The true talent behind the dinner will be Chefs Bill Shugars (Schuylkill Country Club), Chef Joseph Conrad (Parts and Labor/Woodberry Kitchen, Baltimore) and Kate Hersl (Pastry Chef at Troegs brewery, Hershey).

The meal will be preceded by an appetizer reception and farm walk.  We will also hold a silent auction to benefit the effort to establlish Schuylkill County's first homeless shelter (Servants To All).  Tickets are $75pp and seating will be limited to 50!  So call or e-mail to order your tickets right away!  This is a pinnacle event for our small, sustainable, chemical-free farm as it highlights all of the bounty produced here on one table!

Hey Folks!

We are excited to announce the first in a year-long series of presentations we're calling "Homesteader's Roundtable".  These will be presentations, demonstrations, classes, and discussions on the topic of sustainable self sufficiency, no matter where you live!

Our first presenters are Wes and Linda Loder who have built a solar/off-the-grid home in the Lehigh Valley.  Wes and Linda share their experiences in building their solar powered home.  They will also demonstrate a simple solar cooker used for baking and cooking homegrown food.

They will be presenting during our pot-luck dinner here at the farm this Saturday, August 9th at about 5:30.  We'll also be showing a kid's movie after the Loder's presentation! If you plan on coming please bring a dish to share and  please RSVP.

Hey good folks,

You are invited to join us for a pot luck dinner this Saturday, August 9th from 5-9 here at the farm.  This is a great way to connect with the farm where your food is grown and us, your farmers who work hard to grow chemical free food.  Please bring a dish to share and  some walking shoes as we'll walk the farm during the evening.  Please RSVP either on Facebook or by responding to this e-mail.  Looking forward to actually hanging out with you!

Hey good folks,

NEW MEMBER FARM WALK

Every season we invite new CSA members to join us on a walk of the farm to get familiar with the farm and family that will feed them this year.  The New Member Farm Walk will be this Saturday at 12 noon following a greens sale from 10-12.  New CSA members, please plan to join us and if you do, please be prepared to walk uneven ground with appropriate footwear!  Hats are also suggested as it looks like we might have a beautiful day on Saturday!

GREENS SALE

Despite the one week delay in our CSA this season, we are still harvesting fair quantities of certain greens but not enough variety to start up the CSA and markets.  So we will have another greens sale this weekend here at the farm from 10-12.  Veggies will include head lettuce, mixed salad greens, chard, Napa cabbage, garlic chives and more.  Ordering will be online and will begin now and end Friday night at 8:00 p.m.  Please see ordering instructions below if you haven't ordered online before.

We are hopeful that without any more HELL, I mean hail, and a bit warmer temperatures, we'll begin to really take off in the fields!  Stay tuned for more farm news.

Hey Good Folks!

Due to the recent hail thrashing, torrential rain and late cold spring we are going to delay the start of the CSA by one week for Reading members and local folks who pick up at the farm. The Pottsville Market pick-up will remain unchanged (beginning on Saturday, June 7th). We suffered some crop losses that, with another week or so, the plants will have appropriate time to regrow! We’ve heard from other CSA’s in the region that are considering doing the same and think it’s prudent to wait. We are going to add a week at the end of the season to make up for the delayed start.

So…this means that the first pick up at Colonial Fitness in Sinking Spring will be Thursday, June 12th and the last will be Thursday, October 23rd. The Farm pick-up folks first day will be Tuesday, June 10th and the last will be Tuesday, October 21st. The season will still be 20 weeks long.

We know that everyone, including us, is eager to get started. Thanks for understanding and for adjusting to the forces of nature that are truly out of our hands!!! Stay tuned for farm news including new CSA member farm walk and online ordering details.

Hey Good Folks!

Shelackin’

We got our butts thoroughly whooped yesterday! I’ve only seen hail that size driving through a storm in Wyoming many years ago. Yesterday we got pounded by two hail storms that really tore things up. After the first round I walked the farm and found things looking rough but ok. After the second storm our crops looked pretty battered; head lettuce reduced to lumps of “cole slaw”, broccoli, cabbage, Swiss chard peppered with holes, and row cover protecting summer squash and cucumbers full of holes. Coupled with the uncommonly bitter winter and cold spring, this will be another setback for the farm. We’re down BUT NOT OUT! Thank God for the high tunnels we grow in that protected the crops in them and I’m hopeful that what wasn’t destroyed in the rows in the field will recover with some sunshine and warmer temperatures.

CSA

Thank you to all who have joined our CSA including folks who return each year and our new farm friends! We are still accepting new members locally and in the Reading area so get in touch if you are interested in joining our farm. I will be sending e-mails out soon to all new members about details and a farm walk to help familiarize you with our farm.

Troegs Craft Brewery

We are very excited to begin working with Troegs Brewery in Hershey. We made our second delivery yesterday and are looking forward to a long relationship with them. If you haven’t visited yet, aside from world class craft beer, they have a menu that is seasonal and is founded on locally sourced food.

Other Farm News Our first batch of pastured broiler chickens are growing very well. Regretfully, we lost two to a hawk yesterday between the two hail storms; they must have been driven out of their pen by the storm and then been unable to get back in! They will be ready for processing the third week of June so stay tuned for delicious pastured chicken! Kevin, our farm intern for the season is doing a great job keeping up with a ton of work that he has never experienced before. Our goal is to give him a full view of small sustainable farm life, not just field work. So make sure to say hello if you see him during a market, pick up, or delivery. Thank you all for your kind words and messages after the storms yesterday!  We are very hopeful for our best season yet!

Hey Good Folks!

Our summer intern Kevin started yesterday (let's hope he shows up today!!!) so please welcome him when you see him.  He is a student at University of Pittsburgh and has an interest in Sustainable Agriculture.

CSA

If you are local or from the Reading area and are considering joining our farm through our CSA program, now is the time!  We offer half and full shares, a fruit share, and YOU get to choose your produce each week!  See the website for pick up locations and more details and let us know if you have any other questions.

High Tunnel

I am just about finished building the frame of our new high tunnel where we'll grow heirloom tomatoes, peppers, and squash in the summer and loads of greens and root vegetables in the winter.  For the baseboards I ordered local hemlock from a mill around the bend and use hemlock for it's durability against rot and pests without having to use toxic pressure treated lumber.  This will really give us the ability to extend our season on both sides (spring and fall/winter)!

Our pigs are getting used to their new home.  Until I picked them up, they had never been outside or stepped on grass so it was really funny to see them transition to the farm.  Now thy are running around, happy as pigs in .... grass.  Also, our first batch of chicks are in the brooder and will hopefully go out on grass in a week or two.

Thank you again to everyone who came out on Saturday for our Heirloom Tomato Plant/Yard Sale/Farm Walk.  Stay tuned for pre-season greens sales and other farm news!

Hey Good Folks!

The farm has officially SPRUNG!  Garlic is getting tall, first seeds and transplants are in the ground, new tractor and I are plowing and prepping the fields and our livestock is arriving and growing more each week.  I also began building our new high tunnel which will be filled with Heirloom Tomatoes in the summer, and greens and root vegetables for our Fall/Winter CSA!

HEIRLOOM TOMATO PLANT/YARD SALE

HEIRLOOM TOMATOES:  Emily and I communicate in small bursts and it looks like our yard sale and our annual plant sale unexpectedly landed on the same day, Saturday, May 3rd from 8 to 12.  We will be selling our organically grown heirloom tomato plants for: 6 packs of the same variety will be $5.00 and the individual plants in 3" pots will be $2.25.  Some of the tomato varieties include: black cherry, riesentraube cherry, Japanese black trifele, Roman candle, Rutgers, brandywine, black Krim, Cherokee purple, plack prince, Paul Robeson, Striped Roman......and many more (I went a little overboard again this season and am growing over 35 varieties of tomatoes).

GREENS: We will also have the first of our baby head lettuce, spinach, tender pea shoots and Swiss chard for sale (no pre-ordering), as well as our own day range eggs and locally produced raw cheese.

YARD SALE:  Make sure not to miss this!  My mom, my daughter, and I have purged our homes and will be selling something for everyone!  Lots of kid clothes, women's clothing, men's clothing, household items, homemade primitives, décor, some furniture, books, kid things, and much more!  We'll be baking too, so come and get homemade bread and goodies!  Saturday, May 3rd 8-12!!!!!!

We hope to see you on Saturday!
