Heirloom Tomato Plant Sale

This Saturday, May 7th from 10-1 is our annual Heirloom Tomato Plant Sale.  We have a selection of over 30 varieties available in 3" pots as well as flower 6-packs and edible hanging baskets.  The baskets themselves are not edible, the flowers they produce will be (tangerine gem marigold, nasturtium, and calendula)!  We use MacEnroe Organic Potting Soil for all of our plants!

Certified Organic Seed Potato

We will also have certified organic seed potato for sale.  Varieties include Desiree (red skin, yellow flesh), Nicola (yellow skin, yellow flesh), red thumb fingerling (red skin, pink flesh), rose finn (pink skin yellow flesh), and Yukon Gold (yellow skin, yellow flesh).

Farm Walk

At noon we will be taking new CSA members, customers and anyone interested on a walk around our farm.  This is a good way to get to know how, where and why we grow.  Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for hills, mud, and uneven ground!

CSA

We still have plenty of CSA shares available for all of our pick up locations.  See our website for all the details (look under the CSA tab!).

Hey Good Folks,

Great news...Little Peace Farm has been accepted as a vendor at the Farmer's Market in Hershey on Thursdays from 2:30-6:30 beginning May 19th. Don't worry if you don't see us listed in the vendor section, we just haven't been added yet.  All of our new Hershey area friends can find us there! Looking forward to sharing our harvest.

We will not be attending the Pottsville Farmer's Market this summer.  However, we will be setting up market here at the farm on Saturday mornings instead!  Stay tuned for more details.

Hey Good Folks!

I try to not be a complainer.  We live such a blessed life so how dare I.  Even if we didn't have a farm, healthy children, good friends and family I shouldn't complain.  That applies to all aspects of our lives but it doesn't mean I am successful at bearing the trials gracefully all the time.  WARNING: I'm about to complain about the weather and then move on.

FREEZE

Solid freezing temps for two nights in a row (tonight being the second) is really putting a kink in my sleeping habits.  We've got over 100 4-week old pullets (laying hens) that are too tender to put outside and are in one of our unheated outbuildings until either the weather breaks or they mature quickly so...I worry.  We've transplanted all of our sugar snap, giant snow, shell peas, and first planting of spinach out.  They can tolerate some cold and wind but deep freeze and gale-force...I worry.  Our first direct seeding of carrots, salad, cilantro, Asian greens, radish and turnip are just starting to germinate their tender little selves out of the ground just in time for serious cold...I worry.  Our first bed of head lettuce is planted in the high tunnel that stays only a few degrees warmer than outside temps at night...I worry. Will all of these make it?  I am taking measures to prevent what damage I can but since I can't prevent all loss all the time...why worry?  So I trust, pray, and keep on moving!

MOTHER'S DAY WEEKEND PLANT SALE

We are planning our annual heirloom tomato plant sale for Saturday, May 7th from 9-1.  In addition to a large variety of heirloom tomato plants, we will have flowers, herbs, vegetable plants, organic potting mix and more available.  All plants are grown by us, by seed from trusted sources, never GMO/treated seed, in organic potting soil.  We will have singles and 6-packs available.  Please stay tuned for more details as we get closer to the date.

CSA

We have plenty of CSA shares available for the 2016 season.  Ours is a MEMBER CHOICE CSA which means you choose exactly what you want for your share every week for 20 weeks.  Our pick up locations are currently:

Schuylkill Haven (Little Peace Farm)-Tuesday and Saturday

Elizabethtown (Folklore Coffee & Co.)-Wednesday

Hershey (Woo de la Kitchen)-Wednesday

Sinking Spring (Colonial Fitness)-Thursday

Orwigsburg (Healthy Habits Natural Market)-Friday

Please e-mail with any questions and stay tuned for farm events and updates.

Hey Folks,

I've looked at the 10 day forecast and not a day or night at or below freezing!  I'm getting really antsy but tempering it with caution.  We will still get some frigid, below freezing temps but this stretch will get us on track for a great spring crop!

EXTRA CITRUS

We have two cases each of Organic Valencia and Red Grapefruit available.  The cost is $45 for grapefruit and $50 for the Valencias (see previous posts for full descriptions/details).  We'll sell them to the first who respond to this e-mail.

ORGANIC POTTING SOIL

We will again be selling 22 Qt. bags of MacEnroe Organic Potting Soil for $10 for those who are gardening and/or starting their own seed.  We use this potting soil exclusively and have great results every year.

FARM HELP

We have lots of opportunities for folks to get involved on our farm.  We are seeking volunteers, work shares, farm apprentices, and paid positions.  Please call or e-mail your interest in helping and learning on our farm!

Hey good folks!

We're not out of the woods yet!  We've had a couple of "teaser" spring-like days recently but I'm not convinced we're free of the grip of winter.  What better way to kill the winter blues than to bite into a juicy, freshly picked organic grapefruit or oranges?

CITRUS VARIETIES

We will be receiving our next shipment of Organic Citrus from the Thorpes on or around March 7th (we'll give exact details when we get closer to shipment date).  Ordering window will close Thursday, March 3rd at 8:00 a.m.  We're into a new variety of oranges called Valencias which are deeper orange flesh, sweet flavor with just the right amount of tart!  Red Grapefruit are in mid season and are perfect right now.

DISCOUNT ON 2 CASES OR MORE!

Save $5 per case of either valencias or red grapefruit when you order two or more cases. That means if you buy two cases of valencias you pay $50/case instead of $55.  If you buy two or more cases of red grapefruit you pay $45/case instead of $50.  Consider getting a couple other families or friends to go in on a couple of cases to take advantage of the discount!  We are really looking forward to the delicious, healthy organic fruit as much as you!

All ordering is online and instructions to order are below.

Hey folks,

Small Farm Central, a company who creates websites for small sustainable farms (including ours!), founded CSA Day to promote the sustainable farm community through education and marketing.  Check out their website and definitely check out the 2015 CSA Farm Report.  It's loaded with results of a large study of CSA farms just like ours.  The site also includes lots of information about what it means to be part of a CSA farm.  Support your local farm by joining a CSA near you.  If you live close to us or one of our drop off locations, consider becoming part of our community!  As always, if you have any questions, call or e-mail us.

Hello good folks!

Gratefully it hasn't been a long, lonely or terribly cold winter however I had to invoke the Beatles song that I hear in my head about the same time each year!  I wonder if anyone is sharing a raging case of premature Spring fever syndrome?  Well, I've got it BAD!  I'm hearing different songs from our birds, these warm days bring a different smell to morning and I'm working in a t-shirt in our greenhouses and high tunnels.  The kids are noticing the change in season as well, especially the increase in daylight hours.  They don't have to close the hens up as early at night and we're all getting up a little earlier each day; the sun is our alarm clock!

OUR FARM IN A BOX

We're gearing up for another great growing season.  As you might have seen on our Facebook page almost all of our seed has arrived.  I'm like a kid at Christmas when UPS shows up at our doorstep in early February; slippers and pajamas on, mussed hair, nose to the steamed up glass waiting in great anticipation for that order that I spent over a week preparing. It always amazes me that those cardboard boxes basically contain our entire farm for the year!

We're growing varieties new to us this season including: Vates kale, Muir and Skyphos lettuce, Dragon purple carrots, Painted Mountain Milling corn (we're going to give our own corn meal a try!), California Wonder, King of the North and Feher Ozon peppers, and Jaune Flamme heirloom tomato to name a few.  We're hoping these new varieties are a positive addition to our broad line-up of time tested veggies that grown well on our farm and climate.

CSA SHARES

We have plenty of space available for our 2016 CSA!  Pick up locations are: the farm, Healthy Habits Natural Market (O-burg), Woo-de-La Kitchen (Hershey), Folklore Coffee Co. (E-town), Hershey Farmer's Market, and more.  See the website for details and call/e-mail with any questions.

This post was originally intended to be sent the third week in December but I forgot to sent it out!

Hey Good Folks!

The title of this post represents the feeling of packing my last CSA box for the season!  We grew/tended/harvested/washed/packed and delivered a total of over 3000 shares this season.  Our CSA was the largest it's ever been and we had to stop taking members for our Fall CSA because we exceeded what we thought would be our capacity!  We raised 10 hogs this season in the shade of our woods and what a difference that made in their overall growth and happiness.  We raised our first beef cow and are savoring the excellent quality with each meal.
