Jonesing for mid-winter salad greens? Too much cabin fever food? I'll be harvesting all day tomorrow for our next sale tomorrow night 4-6 here at the farm. Aside from mesculin mix we'll have winter squash, garlic, and our own tundra grazed eggs :) See you tomorrow.

Sorry for the repeat e-mail but a friend let me know that the date in the e-mail conflicted with the subject.  See the change below!  Thank you!

We've got a few new varieties of baby salad greens ready for harvest!  Our mesculin mix will include the following: endive, tatosi, Chinese cabbage, salad bowl lettuce, mustard, pea shoots and purple mizuna and more.  Aside from our mesculin we will have spinach and our own brown eggs (we've got LOTS of eggs!).  Come out to the farm from 4-6 this Tuesday, January 27th for some mid-winter greens.  No online ordering!

Hey Good folks!

NURSERY

Hard to believe but today I'm spending a good part of my day in the nursery seeding the first of my starts!  I've got most of my seed orders placed or received and am placing farm supply orders to upgrade and make improvements.  One improvement is the conversion of a passive solar hoophouse into a propane heated one.  This will enable us to grow more baby greens in the winter and to give us the appropriate space we need for all of our seedlings.  We are also doubling the size of our walk-in cooler space.

BALANCES

Just a reminder that if you haven't paid the balance of your CSA share for the 2015 season, they are due today!  Please call or e-mail if you don't know your balance and we'll let you know.

CITRUS

In order to get the next shipment of organic citrus (see previous blog posts) we need to have a group order of at least 50 cases.  To date we've got about 12.  If you are interested in ordering see the previous post on our website to see instructions on how to order.  No payment is due until you pick up your citrus but if you order, you are committed to buying it; we've been stuck with fruit in the past that was ordered but not picked up.

Stay tuned for more farm news and keep spreading the word about our farm!

Hey good folks!

If you're squirreling away that last organic orange or grapefruit from the first shipment or you didn't get to order last time, no worries.  I just spoke with Gayle (farmer down in Florida) and they are sending the next load of organic citrus up this way soon.  We need to reach a minimum of 50 cases to make it worth their while to stop on their way to NY so spread the word!  Below are the details and ordering instructions.  I will let you know the exact pick up day and time when we know we've got the order.

*Red Grapefruits-certified organic, very sweet and beautiful rose colored interior; small, medium and large mixed in each case, very few seeds; cases weigh approximately 30 lbs. and include around 38-42 fruits per case; $50.00/case and $25.00 for a half case.

*Hamlin Oranges-transitional organic, excellent sweetness and flavor for slicing in to wedges or juicing especially to mix with red grapefruit for juice or fresh eating; some seeds; cases weigh about 40-45 lbs. and include about 100-120 oranges per case; $55.00/case and $30.00 for a half case.

Pick up will be here at the farm exact date and time TBA.  Please also remember that if you order, you are committing to purchasing and picking up the fruit!  This is an excellent opportunity to get fresh, organic citrus for an excellent price.

Hey Good Folks!

Our chickens are out in the field with an eggmobile to roost, sleep, and lay in and are surrounded by a moveable poultry fence to keep them in and predators out.  Well, I considered moving our chickens closer to the house today but when I checked, each fence post between the netting was completely frozen in the solid ground.  So the hens stay put and we continue to haul lots of organic feed and water up to our top field for them.  We consider this a minor nuisance for having fresh eggs all year long!

CSA BALANCES DUE

For those who have reserved spots in our CSA by making deposits for the 2015 growing season, the full balances are due by next Friday, January 16th!  If you are not sure of your balance, please e-mail or call and we'll let you know.  Please be aware of the date and the importance for the farm of receiving payments on time!  If you are just learning about our farm and are interested in joining our CSA, we have shares available and are expanding our reach locally and in the region (more announcements to come!).

NEW SEED

I completed my seed inventory and finally finished my seed orders for 2015.  I am very excited to try some new heirloom tomato varieties like Ivory Pear, Green Grape, Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Mortgage Lifter, and Hog's Heart.  This is in addition to over thirty other varieties of tomatoes we grow.  I'm growing for fun and support, an obscure black carrot developed to help feed nutrient deprived subsistence farmers in India (read about it here).  We're also adding new varieties of eggplant, radish, cut flowers, peppers, herbs and more.

Stay tuned for more farm news coming soon!

Hey Good Folks!

Lots of things on the farm are enjoying their annual pause, our family included!  However, that doesn't mean I don't have a list as long as my arm of chores and improvements to make before the 2015 growing season.  I'm grateful for the short break and am already motivated for next season.  I'm finished with my seed inventory and am ordering new seed and am ordering what stock we need for the fields and greenhouses.

GREENS SALE

I will be harvesting today and tomorrow in anticipation for this bitterly cold weather we have in store (3 should not be a temperature!).  We will be having a sale here at the farm this  Wednesday, January 7th from 4-6. There will be no pre-ordering and varieties will include:

kale, spinach, carrots, cabbage, winter squash, baby mesculin mix, and eggs....we have lots of eggs!

Until we see you next, stay warm and stay tuned.

Hey Good folks!
Just wanted to share what we thought was a really funny Christmas moment...

*Running errands today with all of the kids so Em can get some last minute baking done; van unusually quiet; Jude (8) pipes up out of the silence, "Whoa, the first thing Jesus smelled was cow poop!"...silence, then an eruption of laughter.  An epiphany for Jude begins for us the celebration of the true Epiphany!  What a humble beginning for such a King!  Wishing all of you and your families great Peace this Christmas (and Epiphany) season.

Hey Good Folks

I just got back from picking up a late night delivery of fresh picked Florida citrus and yes, I did race to the sink right as I got home and cut open a Hamlin orange and yes, it was one of the most delicious oranges I've eaten and yes, I'm tired and babbling.  If you did order citrus, please remember to pick up tomorrow here at the farm from 4-6.  If you didn't order, let us know as we've got lots of extra!

Hey good folks!

This week marks our 27th week straight of CSA pick up at the farm and we are planning already for next season.  Part of our planning is educating ourselves about how we grow.

ORGANIC FARMER SCHOOL

Well, it isn't really called school but for the past two days I attended the first Growing Pennsylvania's Organic Farms conference in Harrisburg .  Yesterday was dedicated to listening to Jim Travis, one of PA's organic fruit gurus, speak about the method of growing peaches and apples.  Very intimidating due to the complexity of fruit but also very enlightening!  I spent today with Mike and Terra Brownback from Spiral Path Farm, on of PA's largest organic CSA farms.  Also very enlightening and great to learn some techniques we can apply to improve our farm.  Tomorrow and Friday I spend with a great group of regional sustainable farmers at an annual vegetable grower's conference called an Organic Vegetable Intensive.  Here we learn form pros and each other the best methods to produce the highest quality, nutrient dense foods possible.

ORGANIC CITRUS

Last call for fresh picked organic citrus!  We will continue to take orders for organic citrus until tomorrow at 12 noon.  If you are interested and haven't yet ordered, see the latest blog post on our website and follow directions for online ordering.  Pick up will be next Tuesday, December 16th (I believe I said the 15th in the last e-mail but it IS the 16th).  We will hopefully be receiving more citrus throughout the winter.

CHRISTMAS ON THE FARM

This Saturday from noon until 5 we will be hosting our annual Christmas on the Farm Market.  Come to the farm and do your local holiday shopping from a wonderful variety of local artists, jewelers, crafters, quilters, bakers, and more!  There is something for everyone on your list!
